The Houston Rockets might have less salary-cap space than originally expected to absorb the Orlando Magic's undesirable contracts in a potential Dwight Howard trade.
Multiple news outlets reported Saturday night that the New York Knicks were on the verge of acquiring free-agent Raymond Felton in a sign-and-trade deal. If true, that move could signal that the Knicks will not match the Rockets' three-year, $25 million offer sheet for Jeremy Lin.
If the Knicks don't match Lin's offer sheet, the free-agent point guard will end up with the Rockets.
Houston also has made a verbal commitment to sign Chicago Bulls restricted free agent Omer Asik to a three-year, $25 million offer sheet. It's unclear whether the Bulls will match that offer sheet.
If Houston winds up with Lin and with Asik, it will diminish the Rockets' ability to take on some of the contracts that the Magic want to shed in a possible trade involving Howard.
Chris Duhon, Jason Richardson, Quentin Richardson and Hedo Turkoglu each have at least two years remaining on their deals, and Magic officials likely want to trade away some combination of those players.
The Rockets, the Los Angeles Lakers and the Atlanta Hawks have spoken with the Magic in recent weeks about a possible Howard trade.
In any potential Howard trade, the Magic want to shed long-term salary commitments as they add young players and gain future draft picks.
