NHL players 'interested, focused and sober' over contract talks
Donald Fehr isn't scheduled to sit across the table from NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman until next week, so the head of the players' union is prepping members on the status of negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement.

The NHL Players' Association concluded a regional gathering with 40 players Friday in Rosemont and those in attendance were apprised just how desperate the NHLPA deems the situation as the 2012-13 season looms. Union head Fehr described the mood of the two-day meeting as "interested … focused … sobered."

The gathering came just a two days after the NHL reacted negatively to the NHLPA's alternate CBA proposal, meaning the possibility of a third interruption in play since 1994 is a distinct possibility. The 2004-05 season was canceled after the sides could not reach an agreement before they signed the current CBA that expires Sept. 15.

In its initial offer, the league proposed a deal with significant financial concessions from players, including dropping their share of hockey-related revenue from 57 to 46 percent that would result in a 24 percent rollback of salaries.
