Elliott backs Blues in 3-2 victory over Flames
When Blues goaltender Brian Elliott pocketed four victories in his first four appearances this season, he never could have envisioned waiting so long for No. 5.

Elliott made 36 saves Saturday, backstopping the Blues to a 3-2 victory over Calgary in front of a crowd of 18,163 at Scottrade Center. His first ‘W’ in 62 days gave the Blues their third straight win and ended the Flames’ NHL-best winning streak at seven.

On Saturday, Elliott was making his eighth appearance since his last victory — on Oct. 18 (excluding a game as a quick substitute for Jake Allen). He had been 0-3-2 in his last five decisions with a .900 save-percentage.

“Things obviously haven’t gone as planned in the past couple of games,” Elliott said. “But I felt I had been playing well and practicing well and seeing pucks. It’s just trying to go out there and relax and play your own game. Obviously the guys going out and spotting two goals helps with the confidence.”

In Elliott’s last three starts, the Blues gave their goaltender just four goals of support — two in a loss to Philadelphia and one each in defeats at the hands of Columbus and the New York Islanders.

The offense netted Elliott three goals against Calgary, including two in the opening 3 minutes, 47 seconds of the game.

Vladimir Tarasenko, who had a three-point afternoon, got things started with his 21st goal of the season, which briefly elevated him into the NHL lead. However, Dallas’ Jamie Benn answered a short while later, scoring his 21st and 22nd goals as the Stars beat the Canadiens.
